How to use the PPF Calculator
- Enter how much you will deposit, and whether that is once a year or every month.
- Pick how many years. The account runs 15 years and can then be extended in blocks of 5.
- Say whether the money goes in by the 5th of the month. After the 5th it earns nothing that month.
- Read the balance at maturity, what you paid in and the interest. The rate is under More options if you want to try another.
How the balance grows
A PPF account pays simple interest within the year and compounds once a year, on 31 March. The page simulates the account month by month, the way the post office or bank does.
interest for a month = lowest balance after the 5th × rate ÷ 12on 31 March : balance = balance + that year's twelve months of interest
When you deposit once a year by 5 April, every month of the year earns interest on the new deposit, so the year’s interest is simply the balance times the rate. Monthly deposits earn less in the year they are made, because the later ones sit in the account for fewer months.
Why the 5th matters
The scheme counts the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month. A deposit on the 6th doesn’t count until the next month. Depositing on 6 April instead of by 5 April costs a month of interest on that deposit every year, and over 15 years that adds up. Switch the answer to “after the 5th” to see how much.
With your numbers
- Each month earns a twelfth of the yearly rate on the lowest balance after the 5th
- The year’s interest is added on 31 March, so it earns interest itself from the next year

Common questions about the PPF Calculator
- What is the PPF interest rate now?
- The Government sets it every quarter. For October to December 2026 it is 7.1% a year, unchanged since the start of 2024. The page uses that rate for every year of the term, which is an assumption: the real rate will change, so treat the maturity figure as an estimate.
- How is PPF interest calculated?
- Each month earns a twelfth of the yearly rate on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th and the end of the month. The year's interest is added to the account on 31 March, so it compounds once a year. That is why a deposit made by 5 April earns a full year's interest, and one made on 6 April earns only eleven months.
- How much can I put in PPF?
- At least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in multiples of ₹50. You can pay it in one go or in instalments. Anything over ₹1,50,000 earns no interest and is not deductible.
- What happens after 15 years?
- The account matures 15 years from the end of the year it was opened. You can close it, or extend it in blocks of five years, with or without new deposits. The page's longer terms assume you keep depositing the same amount.
- Is PPF interest taxable?
- No. Deposits count toward the deduction limit for savings under the old tax regime, and the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. Under the new regime there is no deduction for the deposit, but the interest is still tax-free.
