Running costs

Fuel cost, gas mileage, road trip cost, mileage reimbursement and depreciation, from your own car's figures.

What a car costs to run is mostly two things: fuel, and the value it loses. Fuel is distance divided by economy, times the price, and the only traps are the units. An mpg figure means different things with US and imperial gallons, twenty percent apart, and litres per 100 km runs the other way, fewer being better; these pages convert between all of them exactly, so the same car gives the same answer whichever you enter. Depreciation is usually larger than fuel and far less visible: a car losing 18% a year costs more per mile in lost value than in petrol at typical prices. The pages here work both out from your own figures. No fuel price, mileage rate or depreciation rate is stored, because each changes with the market and the year; enter the one on your receipt, your employer's policy or your own car's valuation.
