Masonry
Brick, block and retaining wall quantities for a given wall area.
Brick Calculator
Work out how many bricks a single-wythe wall needs, mortar joints included.
Concrete Block Calculator
Work out how many concrete blocks a wall needs at the nominal block size.
Retaining Wall Block Calculator
Count the blocks and caps a retaining wall needs, course by course.
Mortar Calculator
Estimate wet mortar volume around a known number of bricks or blocks.
Brick and block counts come down to one number: how much wall one unit covers, including its mortar joint. A brick that measures 7.625 in occupies 8 in once the joint is there, and across a wall that difference is dozens of bricks. Both calculators here work that out from the dimensions rather than quoting a figure from memory, so a non-standard brick or a wider joint gives the right answer instead of a familiar one. Sizes differ by market and are filled in for your region: US modular brick with a 3/8 in joint, or UK standard with 10 mm. Both are editable. Everything here is single wythe, one unit thick, which is what a garden wall or a single-skin structure is. A cavity wall is two leaves and a different job. Neither calculator estimates mortar, because the quantity depends on joint size, absorbency and technique, and no honest single figure exists.
