How to use the NSC Calculator

- For a certificate bought at an older rate, change the rate under More options.
The calculation
National Savings Certificates (VIII issue) are sold by post offices for a fixed five-year term. Interest compounds annually and is paid out only at maturity, together with the original amount.
value after n years = amount × (1 + rate)^ninterest in year n = value after n years − value after n − 1 yearsmaturity = value after 5 years, rounded to the rupee
The page shows each year’s accrued interest in a table because that is the figure you need for tax under the old regime, year by year.
With your numbers
- Interest compounds once a year and is paid with the deposit after five years
- Each year’s interest is treated as reinvested, which is why it grows from one year to the next

Common questions about the NSC Calculator
- How is NSC interest calculated?
- It compounds once a year and is paid with the deposit at the end of five years. The scheme rules print the result for ₹1,000 at each rate, and those figures are exactly ₹1,000 × (1 + rate) to the power of 5. At 7.7%, ₹1,000 becomes ₹1,449.
- Why does the interest grow each year?
- Each year's interest is added to the certificate and earns interest itself the following year. The first year earns the rate on what you invested; the fifth year earns it on a larger amount.
- Can I claim a tax deduction for the yearly interest?
- Under the old tax regime the interest that accrues in years one to four is treated as reinvested, so it counts toward the savings deduction for that year, alongside the original investment in the year you bought it. The interest is taxable income, so the deduction offsets it. The fifth year's interest is not reinvested and is simply taxed.
- Does the rate change during the five years?
- No. The rate in force on the day you buy the certificate applies for its whole life. A new rate set later applies only to certificates bought after it.
