Fifteen years in, twenty-one years out
The scheme has two clocks. Deposits are made for the first 15 years. The account matures at 21. For the last six years the balance grows on interest alone, compounding once a year at the scheme rate. That is where much of the final balance comes from.
years 1 to 15 balance = (balance + deposit by 5 April) grown by a year's interestyears 16 to 21 balance = balance grown by a year's interestinterest monthly at rate ÷ 12, added each 31 March, rounded to the rupee
The rate
The Government reviews small-savings rates every quarter. For October to December 2026 the Sukanya Samriddhi rate is 8.2%, unchanged since January 2024. The page uses today’s rate for all 21 years. A rate cut or rise along the way would change the maturity amount, so treat it as an estimate.
With your numbers
- Deposits for 15 years; the balance keeps earning interest until the account is 21 years old
- Interest is worked out monthly and added each 31 March, rounded to the rupee

Common questions about the Sukanya Samriddhi Calculator
- Who can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account?
- A parent or guardian of a girl under 10, at a post office or an authorised bank. One account per girl, and at most two accounts in a family, or three where the second birth is twins or triplets.
- How long do I have to keep depositing?
- For 15 years from the date of opening. After that no deposits are needed, but the balance keeps earning interest at the scheme rate until the account matures, 21 years from opening. The page shows both balances.
- How is the interest worked out?
- Each month earns a twelfth of the yearly rate on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th and the end of the month. The interest is added at the end of each financial year and rounded to the nearest rupee. Depositing by 5 April gives the year's deposit a full year of interest, which the page assumes.
- Can money come out before 21 years?
- Up to half of the balance at the end of the previous year can be withdrawn for her education once she turns 18 or passes class 10. The account can also be closed when she marries after turning 18. The page assumes the account runs the full 21 years.
- Is it tax-free?
- Deposits count toward the savings deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are exempt from tax.
