Tax

Sales tax, VAT and GST in both directions, plus capital gains and the effective rate against brackets you enter.

Every rate on these pages is one you enter. These pages store no sales tax rate, no VAT or GST rate, no bracket and no threshold, because those change every year and vary by jurisdiction and by what is being sold, and a stale table produces a confident wrong answer. The rate is on your receipt, your invoice or your tax authority’s guidance, and these calculators do the arithmetic around it. The arithmetic is where the mistakes are. Taking tax back out of a total is a division by one plus the rate, not a multiplication by one minus it, and on a 120.00 gross at 20% that is the difference between 100.00 and 96.00. Tax included in a price is always a smaller share of the gross than the rate suggests: 20% VAT is a sixth of the total, or 16.67%. Amounts here are carried in full and rounded once, where they are displayed, so the tax and the total you see always add up.
