How to use the Post Office RD Calculator

  1. Enter how much you will deposit each month, ₹100 or more.
  2. Read the maturity value after 60 monthly deposits, what you paid in and the interest.
  3. For an account opened at an older rate, change the rate under More options.

The formula behind the scheme’s table

The Post Office Recurring Deposit Scheme sets the maturity amount for each ₹100 a month in a table. Working back from that table gives the rule it follows: every deposit grows at a quarter of the yearly rate per quarter, for the number of thirds of a quarter it has left to run.

maturity = sum over k = 1 … 60 of deposit × (1 + rate ÷ 4)^(k ÷ 3)paid as the nearest rupee

At 7.2% that gives ₹7,231.38 per ₹100 a month, and at 5.8% it gives ₹6,969.67, the two figures printed in the rules. The page applies the same formula at today’s rate.

With your numbers

  1. Each of the 60 deposits compounds quarterly for the time it is in the account
  2. Maturity = sum of P × (1 + rate ÷ 4)^(k ÷ 3) for k = 1 to 60, rounded to the rupee

Quick reference

The rate is fixed for the five years when the account is opened.

Common questions about the Post Office RD Calculator

How is post office RD interest compounded?
Quarterly. Each monthly deposit earns interest compounded every quarter for the time it stays in the account, so the first deposit earns for five years and the last for one month. The scheme rules publish the maturity value per ₹100 a month at each rate, and this page reproduces those tables exactly.
What if I miss a deposit?
A missed deposit can be made up with the next one. After four missed deposits the account is discontinued, though it can be revived within two months. Check the charges for a late deposit with the post office. The page assumes every deposit is made on time.
Can I close it early?
After three years. The interest then is at the Post Office savings account rate, not the RD rate, so closing early earns much less.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate, as it accrues. There is no tax deduction for the deposits.
