How to use the Post Office MIS Calculator

  1. Enter the amount you will deposit, in multiples of ₹1,000.
  2. Pick a single or joint account. A single account takes up to ₹9 lakh and a joint one up to ₹15 lakh.
  3. Read the interest paid each month, each year and over five years.

The calculation

The Monthly Income Scheme is built for steady income. You deposit a lump sum once, and the interest is paid to your savings account every month for five years.

each month = deposit × rate ÷ 12 (rounded to the rupee)each year = 12 × each monthfive years = 60 × each month

The rate is fixed for the five years when the account is opened. Holders of several accounts can’t go over the limit in total: ₹9 lakh for one person, or ₹15 lakh in a joint account, where each holder’s share counts toward their own limit.

With your numbers

  1. Monthly interest = deposit × rate ÷ 12, rounded to the rupee
  2. The deposit itself is returned after five years

Quick reference

The rate is fixed for the life of the deposit. Interest is taxable.

Common questions about the Post Office MIS Calculator

How much monthly income does MIS give?
The deposit times the rate, divided by 12, rounded to the nearest rupee. At 7.4%, ₹9 lakh in a single account pays ₹5,550 a month and ₹15 lakh in a joint account pays ₹9,250.
What happens after five years?
The deposit is paid back in full. The interest has been paid out every month along the way, so the balance does not grow.
Can I take the money out early?
Not in the first year. After one year and before three, 2% of the deposit is deducted; after three years and before five, 1%.
Is the interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate. Post offices do not deduct tax at source on MIS interest, so it has to be declared on your return.
