Doubling, not compounding

Kisan Vikas Patra is described by the time it takes to double your money rather than by a rate. The scheme says the deposit “shall double on maturity”, and the Government notifies the number of months with each quarter’s rates.

maturity amount = 2 × amount investedmaturity date = date bought + notified months (115 now)yearly return = 2^(12 ÷ months) − 1

Because the term is a whole number of months, the maturity date falls on the same day of the month as the purchase. Where that day doesn’t exist, the page uses the month’s last day.

With your numbers

  1. The deposit doubles in the number of months notified when you buy, 115 months at 7.5%

Quick reference

The doubling period is fixed when you buy. Interest is taxable when it accrues or at maturity.

Common questions about the Kisan Vikas Patra Calculator

How long does Kisan Vikas Patra take to double money?
The period is set by the Government each quarter with the interest rate. For October to December 2026 the rate is 7.5% and money doubles in 115 months, which is 9 years and 7 months. The period is fixed on the day you buy, so a later change does not affect your certificate.
What yearly return is that?
Doubling in 115 months is the same as about 7.5% a year compounded annually, which is why the two figures are announced together. The page shows the exact figure, 2 to the power of 12 ÷ 115, minus one.
Can I cash it early?
After two and a half years, at set values that are less than double. Before that only on the death of the holder or by court order.
Is the interest taxable?
Yes. You can declare it each year as it accrues or all at once in the year it matures. There is no tax deduction for buying it.
