How to use the Time to Decimal Calculator
- Choose the direction. Timesheets and invoices usually want hours and minutes turned into decimal hours.
- Enter the hours, minutes and seconds, or the decimal hours.
- Read decimal hours, decimal minutes and total seconds, or the hours, minutes and seconds the decimal stands for.
Two ways of writing the same length of time
Clock notation counts in sixties: 7:45 is seven hours and forty-five sixtieths of an hour. Decimal notation counts in tenths and hundredths: 7.75 is seven hours and seventy-five hundredths of an hour. Payroll software, spreadsheets and billing systems multiply by an hourly rate, so they need the decimal form.
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600decimal minutes = hours × 60 + minutes + seconds ÷ 60back again = decimal hours × 3600 seconds, split into h:mm:ss
One minute is a sixtieth of an hour, 0.0166… in decimal, so most minute values give a decimal that never ends: twenty minutes is a third of an hour. The page keeps the full value and shows four decimal places, which is well inside a second.
Where the conversion goes wrong
Typing 7.45 into a timesheet that expects decimal hours pays 7 hours 27 minutes for a 7 hour 45 minute shift. Typing 7:45 into a spreadsheet cell may store it as a fraction of a day rather than of an hour, and multiplying that by a pay rate gives an answer 24 times too small. Converting explicitly avoids both.
For the time between a start and an end on the clock, use the time duration calculator first, then bring the result here. To total a week of shifts with breaks, the time card calculator does the whole sheet.
With your numbers
- 7 + 45 ÷ 60 + 0 ÷ 3600
- Decimal hours = 7.75

Common questions about the Time to Decimal Calculator
- How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 of an hour, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Seconds are divided by 3,600 and added on as well.
- Why is 7.30 hours not 7 hours 30 minutes?
- Because the part after the point is a fraction of an hour, not a count of minutes. 0.30 of an hour is 18 minutes. Seven and a half hours is 7.5 in decimal. Mixing the two notations is the most common timesheet error, and it always under-counts.
- How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
- Multiply the part after the point by 60. 7.8 hours is 7 hours plus 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes. The page does this for seconds as well, so a decimal that does not land on a whole minute is shown to the second.
- Does this round to the nearest quarter hour?
- No. Many employers round punched times to a tenth or a quarter of an hour, and the rules for doing so vary by employer and by law. The page gives the exact figure; apply your own rounding policy to it afterwards.
