How to use the Hours and Minutes Calculator

  1. Choose whether to add or subtract.
  2. Enter each duration as separate hours and minutes.
  3. Read the normalized duration, total minutes and decimal hours.

Convert to minutes, calculate once

Both durations are converted to integer minutes before addition or subtraction. The result is then split back into hours and minutes. This avoids treating clock notation as a decimal number.

Decimal hours are included for spreadsheets and billing systems, but the primary answer keeps the familiar hour-and-minute form.

With your numbers

  1. First duration = 2 × 60 + 45 = 165 minutes
  2. Sum = 255 minutes = 4 hr 15 min

Quick reference

These are durations, not times of day. Negative results are retained when the second duration is larger.

Common questions about the Hours and Minutes Calculator

Can the result be negative?
Yes. Subtracting a larger second duration retains the negative sign instead of silently swapping the inputs.
Why are minutes limited to 59?
Each pair uses normalized hours and minutes. Put 90 minutes in as 1 hour 30 minutes.
Is 1 hour 30 minutes equal to 1.30 hours?
No. It is 1.5 decimal hours because 30 minutes is half of 60.
