How to use the Land Area Unit Converter (India)

  1. Enter the area and pick the unit it is in, choosing the right state for a bigha or katha.
  2. Read the same area in square feet, square metres, gaj, acres, hectares, guntha, cents, marla, kanal and the West Bengal bigha.

Why the same name means different areas

Land in India was measured long before metric units, using chains and local customs that differed from state to state. A bigha in Bengal and a bigha in Rajasthan share a name but not a size. The page offers each bigha separately and names the state, taking each figure from an official state or central government source.

The units on the page

UnitSquare feetWhere it is used
Gaj (square yard)9North India, for plots
Cent or decimal435.6South and east India
Guntha1,089Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana
Ground2,400Tamil Nadu
Marla272.25Punjab, Haryana
Kanal5,445Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh
Katha (West Bengal)720West Bengal
Bigha (West Bengal or Assam)14,400West Bengal, Assam

How the conversion works

The page turns the area you enter into square feet using the unit’s figure, then divides by each output unit’s figure. A square metre is exactly 10.7639 square feet, and a hectare is 10,000 square metres.

Limits

Bigha, biswa and katha vary within some states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar outside Patna, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The page leaves those out because no single official figure covers them. For a sale or a dispute, use the measure on your land record.

With your numbers

  1. Every unit is converted through square feet; a bigha means a different area in each state
