How to use the Paycheck Calculator

  1. Enter gross pay for one paycheck, before any deductions.
  2. Add each deduction or withholding amount and classify it using the wording on your pay stub.
  3. Compare the estimated net paycheck with the source document and correct any missing rows.

How the paycheck estimate is calculated

The calculation is a reconciliation, not a tax model. Pre-tax pay is gross pay minus the rows you classify as pre-tax deductions. Estimated net pay is gross pay minus every entered pre-tax deduction, withholding amount and after-tax deduction.

estimated net paycheck = gross pay − total entered deductions

The grouped totals help trace a difference back to the right part of a pay statement. Classifying a row changes its group and the pre-tax subtotal, but every row is subtracted once from gross pay. Nothing is silently inferred from income, filing status, location or household information.

Use one consistent pay period

Gross pay and every deduction must belong to the same paycheck. An annual insurance contribution entered beside biweekly gross pay will overwhelm the result, while a monthly deduction beside weekly pay will understate the annual cost. If a source gives annual figures, first divide them using the actual payroll frequency.

Use the labels from the pay stub where possible. Separate retirement, insurance, withholding and other deductions into individual rows so the result is auditable. A single combined row still produces the same net arithmetic, but it is harder to find an omission or duplicate.

What this calculator deliberately does not decide

Whether an item legally reduces taxable wages depends on the plan, jurisdiction and employee circumstances. This page does not determine tax liability, refund, payroll compliance or benefit eligibility. For United States withholding, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and bring its result back as an entered withholding amount.

A pay stub can also contain employer-paid benefits, year-to-date totals, reimbursements and informational lines that are not subtracted from the current check. Enter only amounts that reduce the gross pay for the selected period. If the final estimate differs from payroll, the payroll record controls the real payment.

A practical reconciliation routine

Start with a completed pay stub and reproduce it row by row. Confirm that the gross figure is for the current period, then check the three grouped subtotals and finally the estimated net figure. When they match, the calculator becomes useful for testing an explicit change, such as a different retirement contribution, without pretending to forecast tax rules.

With your numbers

  1. Pay after pre-tax deductions = $3,000.00 − $300.00 = $2,700.00
  2. Total deductions = $300.00 + $600.00 + $100.00 = $1,000.00
  3. Estimated net paycheck = $3,000.00 − $1,000.00 = $2,000.00

Common questions about the Paycheck Calculator

Does this calculator work out my taxes?
No. It subtracts only the withholding amount you enter. Use an official withholding estimator or your payroll department to obtain that amount.
What is a pre-tax deduction?
It is an amount payroll removes before applying some taxes, when the relevant plan and law permit that treatment. Copy the classification from an authoritative pay statement instead of deciding it from the calculator.
Why can estimated net pay be negative?
Entered deductions can exceed gross pay. The calculator leaves that result visible because it usually identifies a duplicated row, wrong period or typing mistake.
Can I enter deductions as percentages?
This version accepts money amounts so it can reconcile a specific paycheck. Convert percentage-based items with the source that defines them, then enter the resulting amount.
