How to use the Bonus Calculator

  1. Enter annual base salary and choose a percentage or fixed bonus.
  2. Enter a withholding percentage or amount only when you have an authoritative estimate.
  3. Add other deductions and compare gross bonus with the estimated net amount.

Gross bonus first

Percentage mode multiplies annual base salary by the entered bonus percentage. Fixed mode uses the amount directly. The gross bonus is kept separate from base salary because a bonus may be paid on another schedule and may not recur.

estimated net bonus = gross bonus − entered withholding − other deductions

The bonus share of base salary provides a quick check. In fixed mode it reveals the percentage represented by the entered amount; in percentage mode it should reproduce the chosen rate apart from display rounding.

Withholding is an input, not an answer supplied by the site

No tax rate is inferred from salary. Enter a percentage only when payroll, an official estimator or a qualified adviser gives you a useful assumption. Fixed-amount mode is appropriate when a pay statement or payroll preview already lists the expected withholding.

For United States estimates, the IRS Tax Withholding guidance is the appropriate starting point. Withholding can differ from final tax liability, and state or local amounts may also apply. The result therefore says estimated net bonus rather than take-home guarantee.

Bonus classification can affect overtime

Whether a bonus is discretionary or nondiscretionary can affect how it enters the regular rate for some covered workers. The US Department of Labor Fact Sheet 56C outlines the federal context. The calculator does not classify a payment or recompute overtime; it values the bonus terms you enter.

Compare like with like

Use the annual base salary that the plan actually references. If the plan bases a bonus on eligible salary for only part of a year, calculate or obtain that eligible base before using percentage mode. Do not mix a percentage withholding estimate with a fixed amount from another bonus period.

When comparing job offers, expected bonuses are uncertain compensation. Run lower and higher scenarios rather than treating a target award as guaranteed. The Job Offer Comparison Calculator can then carry the chosen expected annual value alongside benefits and work hours.

With your numbers

  1. Gross bonus = $85,000.00 × 12% = $10,200.00
  2. Entered withholding = $2,550.00; other deductions = $0.00
  3. Estimated net bonus = $10,200.00 − $2,550.00 − $0.00 = $7,650.00

Quick reference

The net figure is an estimate from your entered withholding, not a tax calculation.

Common questions about the Bonus Calculator

Does the calculator use a default bonus tax rate?
No. Withholding starts from the value you enter. Tax treatment changes by jurisdiction and circumstances, so a universal default would be misleading.
Is withholding the same as final tax liability?
No. Withholding is an amount paid during payroll, while final liability is determined under the applicable tax rules and return. The calculator labels the remainder as an estimate.
What is the difference between discretionary and nondiscretionary bonuses?
The distinction can affect overtime treatment and legal obligations. This calculator values the entered bonus but does not classify it.
Can estimated net bonus be negative?
Yes, if entered withholding and deductions exceed the gross bonus. That usually signals inconsistent periods or an entry that needs checking.
