How to use the Military Time Converter
- Choose the direction. To read a time written like 1430, pick military to 12-hour.
- Enter the hour, minute and AM or PM, or type the four military digits. A colon between them is accepted.
- Read the time as military digits, on the 24-hour clock and on the 12-hour clock.
Two clocks for the same day
The 12-hour clock counts from 12 to 11 twice a day and needs AM or PM to say which half is meant. The 24-hour clock counts the hours of the day straight through from 00 to 23, so every time is written once and no marker is needed. Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits with no colon, so there is no AM or PM to leave off or misread.
12-hour to 24-hour: hour mod 12, plus 12 for PM24-hour to 12-hour: hour mod 12, with 0 written as 12; AM below 12, PM from 12
The awkward hour is 12. Taking the hour modulo 12 first turns both 12 AM and 12 PM into 0, and only then is 12 added for PM, so 12:15 AM becomes 0015 and 12:15 PM becomes 1215.
Military time chart
Every hour of the day on both clocks. The minutes never change, so any time between the hours follows its row: 3:45 PM is 1545 and 12:30 AM is 0030.

What the page does not do
It converts a time of day, not a duration: 1430 here is half past two in the afternoon, not fourteen and a half hours. For elapsed time use the time calculator. It also knows nothing about time zones: a schedule given in UTC or in another city’s time needs the time zone converter first, and the result can then be written in military form here.
With your numbers
- 2:30 PM: the hour becomes 14 on the 24-hour clock
- Military time = 1430

Common questions about the Military Time Converter
- How do I convert to military time?
- For times from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour: 2:30 PM becomes 1430. For AM times, keep the hour and write it with two digits: 7:05 AM becomes 0705. The one exception is the 12 o’clock hour after midnight, which becomes 00: 12:30 AM is 0030.
- How do I read military time?
- The first two digits are the hour from 00 to 23 and the last two are the minutes. If the hour is 13 or more, take 12 away and call it PM: 1945 is 7:45 PM. 00 is the 12 o’clock hour after midnight, and 12 is the noon hour.
- Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
- NIST’s guidance is to use 0000 for midnight at the start of a day and 2400 for the end of a day. Both name the same instant, so this page accepts only 0000 and treats 2400 as an entry error.
- Is 12 PM noon or midnight?
- In common use 12 PM is noon and 12 AM is midnight, and this page follows that. NIST points out that both are strictly ambiguous, since noon is neither before nor after noon, and suggests naming a day with 11:59 p.m. or 12:01 a.m. where it matters, or using the 24-hour clock, where the question never comes up.
