From salary to take-home
taxable income = salary − larger of ($1,000 standard deduction, actual deductions)income tax = brackets − low income tax offset (not below zero)Medicare levy = 2% (phased in just above the low-income threshold)take-home = salary − income tax − Medicare levy − HELP − surcharge
HELP repayments use repayment income, which here equals taxable income. The Medicare levy surcharge applies only without appropriate private hospital cover. Your employer’s 12% super guarantee is paid on top of your salary and is shown for reference.

Common questions about the Australia Income Tax Calculator 2026–27
- What are the tax rates for 2026–27?
- No tax on the first $18,200. Then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above. The lowest rate fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026, and falls again to 14% from 1 July 2027.
- What is the new standard deduction?
- From 2026–27 residents with work income can deduct $1,000 of work-related expenses without receipts. You can instead claim your actual expenses if they come to more. The page uses whichever is larger.
- How does the Medicare levy work?
- 2% of taxable income, reduced for low incomes. Below the low-income threshold no levy is due, and just above it the levy is phased in at 10 cents for each dollar over the threshold. The page uses the 2025–26 thresholds until the ATO publishes the 2026–27 ones.
- What is the low income tax offset?
- Up to $700 off your tax for taxable incomes up to $37,500, falling to $325 at $45,000 and to nothing at $66,667. It can reduce tax to zero but not below.
- What does this leave out?
- Other income, family situations that change the Medicare levy thresholds, other offsets such as the seniors and pensioners offset, and Division 293 tax on super. It is for a resident employee for the whole year.
