How to use the HECS-HELP Repayment Calculator 2026–27

  1. Enter your repayment income for 2026–27.
  2. Enter your current HELP debt to see roughly how long it will take to repay.
  3. Read the compulsory repayment for the year.

The calculation

up to $69,528 nil$69,529 to $129,717 15% × (income − $69,528)$129,718 to $186,050 $9,028 + 17% × (income − $129,717)$186,051 and above 10% × all repayment income

The years-to-repay estimate keeps your income and the 2.8% indexation steady. In practice your income usually rises, so the debt clears sooner.

With your numbers

  1. Under the system from 2025–26, the rate applies only to income above the threshold, not to all of it, until $186,051

Common questions about the HECS-HELP Repayment Calculator 2026–27

How are HELP repayments worked out from 2025–26?
Under the marginal system that began in 2025–26, you repay a percentage of the income above the threshold, not of all your income. For 2026–27 that is 15% of income between $69,528 and $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17% of income above $129,717, and from $186,051 a flat 10% of all your repayment income.
What is repayment income?
Taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, total net investment losses, reportable super contributions and exempt foreign employment income. Salary sacrifice into super counts, so it doesn't lower your HELP repayment.
How much does my debt grow each year?
It is indexed on 1 June by the lower of the consumer price index and the wage price index. The 2026 indexation was 2.8%. Indexation applies to debt more than 11 months old.
Why does my employer withhold more than this?
Employers withhold an estimate from each pay using ATO schedules. The real repayment is worked out on your tax return, and any over-withholding is refunded or credited.
