How to use the EV Charging Cost Calculator

  1. Enter usable battery capacity and the starting and ending state of charge.
  2. Enter wall-to-battery efficiency, average charger power and the electricity price.
  3. Read wall energy for billing, stored energy for the battery and ideal time for planning.

The meter pays for wall energy

Adding 45 kWh to a battery requires more than 45 kWh from the outlet. Charging efficiency represents the share of wall energy that reaches the battery.

stored energy = battery capacity × (ending charge − starting charge)wall energy = stored energy ÷ charging efficiencyideal time = wall energy ÷ average charger power

Cost uses wall energy because that is what the electricity meter records. The time is an ideal average-power estimate and does not model a vehicle’s charging curve.

The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center explains charging levels, equipment power and the factors that affect charging time.

With your numbers

  1. Battery energy added = 75 kWh × (80% − 20%) = 45 kWh
  2. Wall energy = 45 kWh ÷ 90% = 50 kWh
  3. Cost = 50 kWh × $0.16 per kWh = $8.00

Quick reference

Charging power and efficiency vary with temperature, battery state, vehicle limits and accessory loads. Enter average wall-side power for the most useful time estimate.

Common questions about the EV Charging Cost Calculator

Why is wall energy higher than battery energy?
Some energy is lost in conversion, cables, battery conditioning and heat. Dividing stored energy by charging efficiency estimates what the meter supplies.
Why can real charging take longer?
Vehicles limit power, especially near a high state of charge or in extreme temperatures. The charger rating is a ceiling, not a promise of constant power.
Should I enter battery gross or usable capacity?
Use usable capacity when available, because the state-of-charge display normally refers to the usable window protected by the vehicle.
