EV vs Gas Cost Calculator

Compare annual electricity and gasoline costs over the same distance.

Built by AbhiLast reviewed September 20, 2026

Units
Annual driving distance: 12000 mi

Your energy details

Use price per US gallon with mpg, or price per litre with L/100 km.

Result

Estimated annual savings with the EV: $824.00Estimate

The EV's electricity costs 41.1% of what the gasoline car spends on fuel.

This compares energy only. Purchase price, maintenance, charging fees, taxes, idling, weather and driving style are outside the calculation.

EV annual electricity cost

How to use the EV vs Gas Cost Calculator

  1. Enter one annual driving distance and choose miles or kilometres.
  2. Enter EV energy use, gasoline fuel economy and the matching unit for each.
  3. Enter local electricity and fuel prices, then compare annual energy costs and the difference.

Put both vehicles over the same road

The comparison holds annual distance constant. EV efficiency determines kilowatt-hours for that distance; gasoline efficiency determines gallons or litres. Each quantity is then multiplied by its own local price.

EV cost = distance × EV energy per distance × electricity pricegas cost = distance ÷ mpg × price per gallon

For L/100 km, fuel volume is distance in hundreds of kilometres multiplied by the efficiency figure. A positive savings result means the gasoline estimate is higher; a negative result means the EV electricity estimate is higher under the entered values.

The approach follows the energy-cost comparison used by the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center.

With your numbers

  1. EV energy = 12,000 mi × entered efficiency = 3,600 kWh
  2. EV cost = 3,600 kWh × $0.16 per kWh = $576.00
  3. Savings = $1,400.00 − $576.00 = $824.00

Quick reference

This compares energy only. Purchase price, maintenance, charging fees, taxes, idling, weather and driving style are outside the calculation.

Common questions about the EV vs Gas Cost Calculator

Does this include the cost of buying either vehicle?
No. It compares electricity with gasoline over the same distance. Purchase price, finance, insurance, maintenance and resale value are separate.
Can I mix miles and metric efficiency?
Yes. Distance, EV efficiency and fuel economy are converted independently. Fuel price must still match the selected fuel-economy volume: gallon for mpg or litre for L/100 km.
Should I use dashboard or rated efficiency?
Use a measured long-term average when possible. Rated values are useful for comparison, but temperature, speed and accessory use change real consumption.
