How to use the Electricity Bill Calculator

  1. Enter the previous and current cumulative meter readings in the same unit.
  2. Enter the energy price per kWh, fixed charges and any percentage applied to the subtotal.
  3. Compare the estimated total with the energy charge and effective all-in price per kWh.

Read cumulative energy as a difference

Most electricity meters accumulate energy. The billing-period usage is not the current display alone; it is the current reading minus the earlier one.

usage = current reading − previous readingenergy charge = usage × price per kWhtotal = (energy charge + fixed charges) × (1 + percentage fees)

The effective total price divides the complete estimate by metered kWh. It can be much higher than the advertised energy rate in a low-use month because fixed charges are spread across fewer units.

For the distinction between power and billed electrical energy, see the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

With your numbers

  1. Usage = 13,250 kWh − 12,450 kWh = 800 kWh
  2. Energy charge = 800 kWh × $0.15 per kWh = $120.00
  3. Total = ($120.00 + $14.00) × (1 + 5%) = $140.70

Quick reference

Real tariffs may have tiers, time-of-use periods, demand charges, credits and several tax bases. This estimate applies one rate and one percentage to the entered subtotal.

Common energy examples, worked out with the options this calculator starts on for United States.
ExampleEstimated bill total
800 kWh with fixed charge and 5%$140.70
500 kWh with no extra percentage$100.00
1,200 kWh high-use period$303.88
250 kWh international example€91.30
Zero usage with a fixed charge€12.60
100 kWh low-use period€30.00

Common questions about the Electricity Bill Calculator

Why must both readings use the same unit?
Usage is the difference between the readings. Mixing Wh and kWh would make that subtraction meaningless; use the unit picker for the field values.
What happens if the current reading is lower?
The calculator reports zero use because a lower value usually means a meter replacement, rollover or entry mistake. Split the period or check the utility statement.
Can this model tiered or time-of-use rates?
No. It uses one price per kWh. For a tiered or time-of-use tariff, calculate each block separately or use the utility’s own bill estimator.
