Appliance Upgrade Calculator

Compare two appliances by annual energy cost, payback time and net savings.

Built by AbhiLast reviewed September 20, 2026

Current annual energy use: 600 → 400 kWh

Your energy details

Enter the extra out-of-pocket cost of choosing the replacement.

Result

Annual energy-cost savings: $32.00Estimate

Simple payback ignores financing, maintenance, price changes and the remaining life of the current appliance. Use comparable annual energy figures under similar test conditions.

How to use the Appliance Upgrade Calculator

  1. Enter comparable annual energy-use figures for the current and replacement appliances.
  2. Enter your electricity price, the extra upgrade cost and the years you expect to use it.
  3. Use annual savings and simple payback together; check the period net result before deciding.

Compare energy first, then price

Annual kWh is the cleanest comparison because it separates appliance use from the local tariff. The calculator finds the difference in annual energy, prices that difference at your rate, and compares the result with the upgrade cost.

annual savings = (current kWh − replacement kWh) × price per kWhsimple payback = upgrade cost ÷ annual savingsperiod net = annual savings × years − upgrade cost

Simple payback is deliberately simple. It does not discount future money or predict electricity prices, repairs or appliance life. It answers one narrow question: how long the entered annual bill savings take to equal the entered upfront premium.

For comparable labeled estimates, see the FTC EnergyGuide program.

With your numbers

  1. Annual energy saved = 600 kWh − 400 kWh = 200 kWh
  2. Annual cost savings = 200 kWh × $0.16 per kWh = $32.00
  3. Simple payback = $600.00 ÷ $32.00 = 18.75 years

Quick reference

Simple payback ignores financing, maintenance, price changes and the remaining life of the current appliance. Use comparable annual energy figures under similar test conditions.

Common questions about the Appliance Upgrade Calculator

Where do annual kWh figures come from?
In the United States, the yellow EnergyGuide label lists estimated annual energy use and operating cost. Manufacturer specifications or measured use can also work if both appliances are compared consistently.
What should upgrade cost include?
Use the extra out-of-pocket cost relative to keeping or choosing the current option, including installation if it differs.
Why can net savings be negative?
The electricity savings may not recover the upgrade price within the period entered. A negative result is the unrecovered amount under these assumptions.
