How to use the LED Savings Calculator

  1. Enter the old and replacement lamp wattage and how many lamps will change.
  2. Enter daily operating hours, annual use days, your electricity price and total upgrade cost.
  3. Check annual energy savings, cost savings and the simple payback period.

Wattage is demand, hours make savings

LED savings come from the difference between the old and new power ratings multiplied by the time every lamp operates.

annual kWh saved = (old watts − LED watts) × lamps × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000annual cost savings = annual kWh saved × price per kWh

Use lumens to make sure the replacement produces enough light. Watts describe power demand, not brightness, so a low-watt lamp that is too dim is not an equivalent replacement.

ENERGY STAR’s light bulb guidance explains why brightness should be compared in lumens and energy use in watts.

With your numbers

  1. Annual energy saved = (60 W − 9 W) × 10 × 3 hours × 365 days
  2. Energy saved = 558.5 kWh
  3. Annual savings = 558.5 kWh × $0.16 per kWh = $89.35

Common energy examples, worked out with the options this calculator starts on for United States.
ExampleEstimated annual cost savings
Ten 60 W lamps replaced by 9 W LEDs$89.35
Six 75 W lamps replaced by 11 W LEDs$112.13
Twenty office lamps$153.00
Four frequently used lamps€113.00
One rarely used lamp€0.85
Fifty commercial lamps€712.80

Common questions about the LED Savings Calculator

Can I compare any two lamp wattages?
The arithmetic can, but a useful decision compares lamps with suitable equivalent brightness. Use lumens, not watts, to compare light output.
Does the calculator include longer LED life?
No. It counts electricity savings only. Replacement lamps and maintenance labor may add value, but their timing and cost vary.
Why can payback be long for one lamp?
A lamp used only briefly saves few watt-hours. High operating hours, a large wattage reduction and a high electricity price shorten payback.
