How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. Add each weighted assignment group or individually weighted assessment.
  2. Enter its earned and possible points, then the percentage of the course it controls.
  3. Compare the normalized current grade with the contribution earned toward the full course.

Category-weighted grading

For each row, the calculator first determines its percentage and then applies the syllabus weight:

category percentage = points earned ÷ points possiblecourse contribution = Σ(category percentage × category weight)

This matches the weighted assignment-group model described by Penn’s Canvas guidance. Within a category, larger point-value assignments can still carry more weight because the category percentage is calculated from total points.

Two answers are intentionally shown. Contribution is what entered categories have added to the eventual course total. The normalized result divides by the weight entered so far, resembling a gradebook that calculates only graded work. Your syllabus and LMS settings determine which view is official.

With your numbers

  1. Entered categories represent 100% of the course.
  2. Their contribution toward the full course grade is 79%.
  3. Normalized weighted grade = contribution ÷ represented weight = 79%.

Quick reference

Common questions about the Weighted Grade Calculator

What is the normalized weighted grade?
It divides the contribution earned so far by the weight represented by the entered rows. It answers how you are performing on entered work.
What is contribution toward the full course?
It is the percentage points already contributed to the eventual 100% course grade without rescaling missing categories.
Must the weights total 100%?
A complete ordinary course plan normally does. A partial plan may total less, while some extra-credit systems can exceed 100%.
Should each homework item be entered separately?
If homework is one weighted category, total its earned and possible points and enter the category once.
