How to use the Final Grade Calculator
- Enter your current course grade before the final exam is included.
- Enter the overall grade you want and the final exam’s percentage weight.
- Review the required score, its achievable status and an expected-score scenario.
Solving the weighted grade backwards
If the final controls a fraction w of the course, existing work controls
1 − w:
overall grade = current grade × (1 − w) + final score × wrequired final = [target − current grade × (1 − w)] ÷ w
The current grade must exclude the final. This is the most common source of a wrong result: some gradebooks display a normalized grade based only on graded work, while others may display zeros for missing work.
The achievable label is mathematical only. Extra credit could make a score over 100% possible, while a syllabus may require a minimum final score even when the overall target is already secured. Check both the grading formula and any separate pass conditions.
With your numbers
- Current work contributes 57.4% before the final.
- Required final score = (target − current contribution) ÷ final weight = 92%.
- The entered expected score produces 84.4% overall.
Quick reference
The current grade must exclude the final and already represent all other course work.
| Example | Score needed on the final |
|---|---|
| 82% current, 85% target, final worth 30% | 92% |
| 80% current and target, final worth 20% | 80% |
| Target already secured | -30% |
| Target requires more than 100% | 250% |
| Final worth half the course | 84% |
| Small final-exam weight | 98% |
Common questions about the Final Grade Calculator
- Should current grade include the final as a zero?
- No. Enter the grade for the non-final portion only. A gradebook that counts an ungraded final as zero must be converted first.
- Why is the required score above 100%?
- The target is not achievable from ordinary final-exam points at the entered weight. The number shows the size of the gap.
- What does already secured mean?
- The non-final portion already contributes enough to meet the target even with zero on the final, assuming no separate must-pass rule.
- Does this handle a must-pass final?
- No. A minimum exam requirement is a separate policy and can override the arithmetic course average.
