How to use the Grade Calculator
- Add each graded assignment, quiz, project or exam.
- Enter the points earned and points possible for every item.
- Check the total-points percentage and compare it with your official gradebook.
Raw-points grading
This calculator adds points before dividing:
current grade = total points earned ÷ total points possible
That method is correct only when the course is points based. If an exam is worth 100 points and a quiz is worth ten, the exam contributes ten times as much. Do not use this method when your syllabus instead says homework is 20%, projects are 30% and exams are 50% regardless of their point totals.
Blank or ungraded assignments should normally be left out until the instructor assigns a score. Enter zero only when the gradebook treats the item as a zero. Extra credit can be represented by points earned above points possible, but the official syllabus controls whether that is permitted and how it is applied.
With your numbers
- Points earned = 143
- Points possible = 170
- Current grade = earned ÷ possible = 84.12%

Common questions about the Grade Calculator
- Why are larger assignments worth more here?
- This is a raw-points calculator. An assignment worth 100 points contributes ten times as much as one worth 10 points.
- Can earned points exceed possible points?
- Yes, when extra credit is awarded inside an assignment. The result may then exceed 100%.
- What if my syllabus weights exams and homework separately?
- Use the weighted grade calculator. Adding raw points is wrong when categories have fixed percentage weights.
- Does this convert the result to a letter grade?
- No universal letter scale exists. Compare the percentage with the thresholds in your syllabus.
