How to use the Weighted GPA Calculator
- Enter each course, its credits and its ordinary grade-point value.
- Enter the bonus your school gives that course level, such as honors or AP.
- Set the maximum weighted point value and compare weighted with unweighted GPA.
Weighted and unweighted results
The unweighted result uses each entered grade-point value. The weighted result adds the course-level bonus before multiplying by credits:
weighted course points = min(grade points + bonus, maximum scale)weighted GPA = Σ(weighted course points × credits) ÷ Σcredits
High schools do not share one grading scale. College Board notes that schools assign different cutoffs and weights and that colleges may recalculate GPA. That is why every bonus and the cap stay editable here.
Use the result to reproduce a known policy or compare scenarios. Do not label a course honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment based on its difficulty alone; use the classification on the official transcript.
With your numbers
- Unweighted GPA = 3.6667
- Weighted GPA applies each entered bonus before credit weighting = 4.1667
- Difference from weighting = 0.5

Common questions about the Weighted GPA Calculator
- Is an AP course always worth one extra point?
- No. Weighting policies differ. Enter the bonus published by your school rather than assuming a universal AP or honors value.
- What is unweighted GPA?
- It uses the ordinary grade-point value for every course, with credits still controlling how much each course contributes.
- Why is there a maximum scale?
- Some policies cap the points available for any course. The cap prevents a bonus from exceeding the maximum you enter.
- Will a college use this weighted GPA?
- Not necessarily. Colleges may remove, change or recalculate high-school weighting when reviewing applications.
