How to use the Cumulative GPA Calculator

  1. Enter the cumulative GPA and GPA credits shown before the new term.
  2. Add the new courses with their credits and grade-point values.
  3. Compare the new-term GPA with the estimated updated cumulative GPA.

Do not average term GPAs

A cumulative GPA combines quality points, not displayed averages:

previous quality points = previous GPA × previous GPA creditsupdated GPA = (previous quality points + new quality points) ÷ (previous credits + new credits)

The Duke University Registrar specifically cautions against averaging semester GPAs. A 15-credit term must carry more influence than a six-credit term.

Rounding is the unavoidable limitation

If a transcript shows 3.28, the underlying GPA might be anywhere within the institution’s rounding or truncation interval. Multiplying the displayed value by previous credits reconstructs an approximation of prior quality points. Your official academic system retains the unrounded record and may differ in the last decimal places.

With your numbers

  1. Previous quality points = 3.2 × 60
  2. New-term GPA = 3.6
  3. Updated cumulative GPA = 3.28

Common questions about the Cumulative GPA Calculator

Can I average two semester GPAs?
Not unless both semesters contain exactly the same GPA credits. Cumulative GPA must be calculated from total quality points and total credits.
Why is the updated GPA an estimate?
The previous GPA you enter may already be rounded or truncated, so reconstructing its quality points can introduce a small difference.
Do transfer credits count?
Only if your institution includes their grades in its cumulative GPA. Many schools accept the credit but exclude the grade.
Should repeated courses appear again?
Follow your school’s repeat policy. Some replace the first grade, while others include both attempts.
