How to use the GPA Calculator
- Add each course that counts toward the GPA you are checking.
- Enter its credit value and the grade-point value assigned by your school.
- Review the total quality points, GPA credits and credit-weighted term GPA.
How the GPA is calculated
For every course, the calculator forms a quality-point contribution:
course quality points = course credits × grade-point valueterm GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA credits
This is a weighted average. A four-credit course contributes four times as much as a one-credit course with the same grade. The method follows the explanation published by the University of Notre Dame Registrar.
Use the scale on your academic record
There is no universal mapping from percentages or letter grades to GPA points. Some schools use 4.0, some award 4.33 for A+, and other systems use five, ten or another maximum. Enter the actual grade-point value from your syllabus, transcript key or registrar.
Courses marked pass, satisfactory, withdrawn or audited often carry credit without affecting GPA. Omit them unless your institution explicitly includes them. This calculator reproduces entered arithmetic; it does not reinterpret an academic record.
With your numbers
- Total quality points = 28
- GPA credits = 9
- Term GPA = quality points ÷ GPA credits = 3.1111

Common questions about the GPA Calculator
- How is GPA calculated?
- Multiply every course grade-point value by its credits, add those quality points, and divide by the credits that count toward GPA.
- Should pass/fail courses be included?
- Only if your institution assigns them grade points and includes them in GPA. Otherwise leave them out even when they award degree credit.
- Can I use a scale other than 4.0?
- Yes. Enter the grade-point values from your own scale. The arithmetic does not assume that four is the maximum.
- Why might this differ from my transcript?
- Schools differ on repeated courses, withdrawals, transfer work, rounding and which courses count. Your registrar remains authoritative.
