How to use the Reading Time Calculator
- Enter the assigned page count and an estimated number of words per page.
- Enter a measured or realistic reading speed for this kind of material.
- Add time for notes or review with the multiplier and choose a session length.
Estimating the assignment
The page estimate is converted to words before time is calculated:
estimated words = pages × words per pagebase minutes = estimated words ÷ words per minuteadjusted minutes = base minutes × review multipliersessions = ceil(adjusted minutes ÷ session length)
A 2019 review of 190 studies estimated average adult English silent-reading rates around 238 words per minute for nonfiction and 260 for fiction, while also finding meaningful variation by population and material. See Brysbaert’s meta-analysis.
Dense technical material can require slower reading and frequent problem solving, while familiar prose may be faster. Measuring a few pages of the actual assignment is more useful than adopting a population average. The session count rounds up because any remaining minutes require another session.
With your numbers
- Estimated words = pages × words per page = 12,000.
- Base reading time = words ÷ reading speed = 60 minutes.
- After the entered review multiplier, plan 75 minutes across 3 sessions.
Quick reference
Reading speed and page density vary; calibrate them with your own material when possible.
| Example | Adjusted reading minutes |
|---|---|
| 40 pages with notes in three sessions | 75 |
| Ten-page article without review time | 20 |
| Dense textbook chapter | 135 |
| Fast fiction reading estimate | 83.3 |
| Short technical paper with notes | 105 |
| Measured 238-word reading pace | 30.3 |
Common questions about the Reading Time Calculator
- How can I measure my reading speed?
- Read representative material for several timed minutes, count the words completed with reasonable comprehension, and divide by minutes.
- Why use words per page?
- Page density changes with type size, margins, figures and formatting. A textbook page and a novel page rarely contain the same number of words.
- What does the review multiplier do?
- It increases base reading time for highlighting, notes, rereading or practice. A multiplier of 1.25 adds 25%.
- Is 200 words per minute universal?
- No. Pace changes with reader, language, familiarity, text difficulty and the level of comprehension required.
