How to use the Attendance Calculator
- Enter how many classes have been held and how many you attended.
- Enter the attendance target and the number of classes still scheduled.
- Review the current rate, consecutive attendance needed and projected safe absences.
Attendance arithmetic
The current rate is straightforward:
attendance rate = classes attended ÷ classes held
When the current rate is below target, the calculator solves for the number of
future classes x needed so that (attended + x) ÷ (held + x) reaches the
target. The safe-absence result assumes every other scheduled future class is
attended.
Attendance definitions are not uniform. The NCES forum guide notes that authorities differ even on whether certain excused absences count as attendance. Partial days, labs, late arrivals, medical exemptions and must-meet course rules can also change the official record. Use the calculator for planning, then check the school’s attendance portal and policy.
With your numbers
- Current attendance = attended ÷ held = 85%.
- Attending every remaining class would finish at 90%.
- The target requires 20 consecutive attended classes from now.
Quick reference
The projection treats every scheduled class equally and does not interpret excused or partial attendance.
| Example | Current attendance rate |
|---|---|
| 34 attended of 40 with a 90% target | 85% |
| Already above a 75% target | 83.33% |
| Perfect attendance | 100% |
| Target not reachable in remaining classes | 62.5% |
| One absence in ten classes | 90% |
| No future classes scheduled | 90% |
Common questions about the Attendance Calculator
- How is attendance percentage calculated?
- Divide attended classes by classes held. The projection gives every entered class equal weight.
- What are consecutive classes needed?
- It is how many future classes must all be attended before the running percentage reaches the target.
- What are additional absences available?
- It is the maximum projected misses among scheduled remaining classes if every other remaining class is attended.
- Do excused absences count?
- That depends on institutional policy. Enter the counts the official attendance system treats as held and attended.
