How to use the Gold Price by Purity Calculator
- Enter the weight of the jewellery in grams, from the bill or a scale.
- Pick the purity stamped in its BIS hallmark, such as 22K916 or 18K750.
- Enter today's 24K rate per gram and the jeweller's making charge as a percentage.
- Read the gold value, the making charge and the price before GST.
Gold content first
A piece of jewellery is an alloy. Its hallmark says how much of the weight is gold, and that is what you pay the gold rate on.
pure gold (g) = weight × fineness ÷ 1000gold value = pure gold × (24K rate ÷ 0.999)making charge = gold value × making %price = gold value + making charge (before GST)
Jewellers often publish their own 22K and 18K rates. They are usually close to the 24K rate scaled by fineness, but each shop sets its own, so the page’s figure can differ a little from a jeweller’s board.
When you sell
Buyers pay on the pure gold content, at their own buying rate, and do not refund making charges or GST. The pure gold figure here is the useful one for comparing offers.
With your numbers
- Pure gold content = weight × fineness from the hallmark
- Gold value = pure gold content × the 24K rate ÷ 0.999, since the 24K rate is quoted for 999 gold
Quick reference
GST is added on the bill. A jeweller’s own 22K or 18K rate may differ slightly from the fineness ratio.

Common questions about the Gold Price by Purity Calculator
- What do 916, 750 and 585 mean on a hallmark?
- They are the gold content in parts per thousand. 22K jewellery hallmarked 916 is 91.6% gold, 18K at 750 is 75% and 14K at 585 is 58.5%. The BIS standard IS 1417 allows six grades for jewellery: 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K.
- Why is 24K jewellery 995 and not 999?
- The BIS jewellery standard's highest grade is 24K at 995. The 999 figure belongs to refined bars and coins under a separate standard. The 24K rate quoted each day is for 999 gold, so the page divides it by 0.999 to get the price of pure gold before applying your piece's fineness.
- How do jewellers charge for making?
- Either as a percentage of the gold value, often between 8% and 25% for machine-made and handmade pieces, or as a fixed amount per gram. The page uses a percentage. If your jeweller charges per gram, multiply that by the weight and add it to the gold value instead.
- Is GST included?
- No. GST is charged on the bill on top of the gold value and the making charge. Add it at the rate printed on your invoice.
- What is the HUID on a hallmark?
- Since 1 July 2021 every hallmarked piece carries a six-character Hallmark Unique Identification number. You can check it in the BIS CARE app to confirm the purity and the jeweller who sold it.
