How to use the Job Offer Comparison Calculator
- Enter annual cash compensation and employer-paid values for Offer A and Offer B.
- Subtract recurring employee-paid work costs and enter expected weekly hours and work weeks.
- Compare adjusted annual value and effective hourly value, then review non-financial differences separately.
Build each offer from the same categories
Cash compensation is base salary plus expected annual bonus and commission. Total compensation adds employer retirement contributions, employer-paid benefit value and other compensation. Adjusted value then subtracts recurring work costs paid by the employee.
effective hourly value = adjusted annual value ÷ expected annual work hours
Expected annual work hours are hours per week multiplied by work weeks per year. The result does not add commute time or unpaid availability unless you include those hours in your expectation.
Use expected values, not maximum marketing figures
A target bonus, commission opportunity or equity grant is uncertain. Enter an amount you genuinely expect to receive in a normal year, and run a lower scenario when the outcome varies widely. Guaranteed salary and contingent compensation remain separate rows so that uncertainty stays visible.
Employer retirement contributions can depend on employee contributions, vesting and eligibility. Benefits can have very different personal value depending on coverage and alternatives. The calculator does not fetch market averages because a generic value can misrepresent a specific offer.
Make annual periods consistent
Every money input is annual. Convert monthly allowances or per-paycheck premiums before entering them. Recurring work costs can include required travel, licensing, equipment or additional care arrangements, but one-time moving expenses should be compared separately unless annualising them is deliberate.
Expected weeks should reflect unpaid leave or seasonal gaps. Hours should reflect the realistic schedule, not only the nominal contract, when the purpose is an effective-hourly comparison. Run several scenarios when workload is uncertain.
Read both value measures
Adjusted annual value answers which offer produces the larger entered compensation package after recurring costs. Effective hourly value answers how much that package represents per expected work hour. One offer can lead on annual value while the other leads on hourly value.
Neither figure is after tax. Different compensation types can receive different tax treatment, and benefits may not be cash. Use the A-minus-B row as a transparent arithmetic difference, then make a separate written list for vesting, risk, location, flexibility and career considerations that do not belong in a pay formula.
With your numbers
- Offer A adjusted value = $102,000.00 − $0.00 = $102,000.00
- Offer B adjusted value = $107,000.00 − $0.00 = $107,000.00
- Offer B has the higher estimated compensation value: $107,000.00

Common questions about the Job Offer Comparison Calculator
- Are employer-paid benefits worth their sticker price?
- Only you can choose a comparison value. Enter the amount the benefit is worth for this decision, considering coverage, eligibility and alternatives.
- Should I include stock compensation?
- You may enter a conservative expected annual value under other compensation. Consider vesting, liquidity and forfeiture separately because the calculator does not model them.
- Why subtract work costs before calculating hourly value?
- Recurring costs reduce the annual value available to you. Subtracting them before dividing by hours makes the two offers more comparable on the assumptions entered.
- Does the higher result identify the better job?
- No. It compares entered compensation only and does not score job security, career growth, commute time, flexibility, management or personal preference.
