How to use the Cabinet Door Calculator
- Measure the opening in the face frame or cabinet box, width and height.
- Choose overlay or inset, and one door or a pair.
- Enter the overlay your hinges give, or the reveal you want around an inset door, and the gap between a pair.
- Read the width and height to make each door.
How it is calculated
overlay: door across = opening width + 2 × side overlay door height = opening height + 2 × top and bottom overlayinset: door across = opening width − 2 × reveal door height = opening height − 2 × revealpair: each door = (door across − gap) ÷ 2
Sizes are shown to the nearest sixteenth of an inch in imperial and in millimetres in metric.
Before cutting
Measure every opening; face frames are rarely identical, and a door that fits one may not fit its neighbour. For a run of cabinets with a continuous line of doors, set the gap between neighbouring doors the same as the gap within a pair so the reveals line up. Drawer fronts follow the same arithmetic but are sized to the drawer opening, and frame-and-panel parts (stiles, rails and the panel) are a further step this page does not take.
With your numbers
- Width covered = 25 in
- Door = 25 in × 31 in

Common questions about the Cabinet Door Calculator
- How big should an overlay cabinet door be?
- The opening plus the overlay on each edge. A 24 × 30 inch opening with a 1/2 inch overlay all round takes a door 25 × 31 inches. For a pair, take the gap off that width and halve it: two doors 12 7/16 inches wide with a 1/8 inch gap.
- How do I size an inset door?
- Take the reveal off every edge. A 15 × 30 inch opening with a 1/16 inch reveal takes a door 14 7/8 × 29 7/8 inches. Many makers build inset doors to the opening and plane them to fit, which gives the same size by a different route.
- Where does the overlay figure come from?
- From the hinges. Concealed hinges are sold for a particular overlay, and face frame hinges are made for one too, so read it from the hinge maker's specification before cutting. The page does not choose an overlay.
- Can the side and top overlays differ?
- Yes. Enter them separately; stacked or adjoining cabinets often have a smaller overlay where two doors meet over a shared frame member.
