How to use it

  1. Add the lengths of all walls receiving wainscoting.
  2. Subtract the combined widths of doors and other full-height interruptions.
  3. Enter the installed height and actual face width of one panel.
  4. Add a custom allowance for layout cuts and read the panel count.

How it is calculated

The calculator treats the installation as a straight run of equal-width pre-sized panels:

Net run = total wall run − opening widths
Panels = ceil(net run ÷ panel width × (1 + allowance))
Face area = net run × installed height

Use the actual installed face width rather than the nominal sheet size.

Layout before cutting

Centre the pattern deliberately. Equal cut panels at both ends of a feature wall often look better than a full panel at one end and a narrow sliver at the other, but can use more material.

Mark corners and interruptions. Inside corners, outside corners, sockets, radiators and built-ins all affect useful offcuts.

Keep the top line level. Floors are often uneven. Establish the rail or cap from a level datum instead of measuring the same height up from the floor at every panel.

Acclimatise wood products. Follow the manufacturer’s storage and moisture guidance before installation.

With your numbers

  1. Net wall run = 40 ft − 6 ft = 34 ft
  2. Divide by 32 in panel width and add 0% extra
  3. Round the result up to 13 panels

Quick reference

No extra is added by default. Use Custom for corner cuts, panel centring, damaged edges and pattern selection.

Common questions

How many 32 inch panels for 34 feet of wall?
The exact run is 12.75 panels. With a 10% allowance it becomes 14.025, which rounds up to 15 panels.
Does panel width include the tongue?
Use installed face width. An overlapping tongue or joint that disappears behind the next panel does not add coverage.
Are rails and stiles included?
No. This counts full-width panels only. Cap, chair rail, base moulding, stiles and corner trim need a separate linear layout.
Should I subtract windows?
Subtract the width only when the opening fully interrupts the wainscoting height. Low sills and trim layouts may still need material beneath or beside the opening.
