Asphalt Calculator

Estimate compacted asphalt volume and weight using a supplier-provided mix density.

Last reviewed September 19, 2026

Units

Your measurements

Enter the compacted density provided for the exact asphalt mix.

Result

Enter length, width and supplier mix density to see the result.

Results are estimates for planning only. Actual needs vary with site conditions, products and workmanship. Always confirm quantities with your supplier and follow local building codes and manufacturer instructions. Read the full disclaimer

How to use it

  1. Enter the paved length and width, or a measured total area.
  2. Enter the required finished compacted asphalt depth.
  3. Enter the compacted density supplied for the exact asphalt mix.
  4. Add the contractor or supplier allowance and read the volume and weight.

How it is calculated

The compacted volume is converted to mass with the density you enter:

Exact volume = paved area × compacted depth
Order volume = exact volume × (1 + allowance)
Mass = order volume × supplier mix density

All dimensions and density units are converted before multiplication.

Ordering limits

Ask for the mix density. Use the supplier’s value for the mix and basis of measurement on the quote. The example density is only an arithmetic test case, not a recommendation.

Confirm lift design. Total compacted depth may need more than one lift. Maximum and minimum lift thickness depend on the mix and equipment.

Plan delivery constraints. Minimum loads, cooling time, truck access and paving sequence can control the real order more than the geometric quantity.

Measure irregular edges. Split curves and tapers into simpler measured areas instead of using the largest bounding rectangle.

With your numbers

  1. Compacted volume = 200 ft² × 3 in
  2. With 0% extra = 1.852 yd³
  3. That volume × the entered mix density = 3.625 ton

Quick reference

No extra is added by default. Use Custom for the supplier or contractor allowance appropriate to the job and delivery method.

Common questions

How many tons of asphalt for 200 square feet at 3 inches?
The compacted volume is 50 ft³. At an illustrative entered density of 145 lb/ft³ and 5% extra, the result is 7,612.5 lb, or about 3.806 US tons.
Why is there no default asphalt density?
Mix composition and the supplier’s compacted-density basis vary. A generic default would make a precise-looking tonnage without identifying the material being ordered.
Is the entered depth loose or compacted?
Enter finished compacted depth. Loose placement thickness and compaction procedure must come from the paving specification or contractor.
Does this include base material?
No. Asphalt and aggregate base are separate layers with different depths and densities. Calculate the base independently.
