How to use the Leave Encashment Tax Calculator

  1. Enter your average monthly salary over the last ten months of service, counting basic pay and dearness allowance that counts for retirement benefits.
  2. Enter the earned leave days at credit, your completed years of service and the encashment you received.
  3. Add any leave encashment exemption you claimed from earlier employers.
  4. Read the exempt amount, the taxable amount and which limit set it.

The four limits

The Income-tax Act, 2025 exempts the smallest of these:

  1. The cash value of your earned leave at credit, valued at your average salary, counting no more than 30 days for each completed year of service.
  2. Ten times your average monthly salary over the ten months before you left.
  3. ₹25 lakh, less any leave encashment exemption you claimed before.
  4. The leave encashment you actually received.

The rest is taxed as salary.

A worked case

You retire after 25 years with 350 days of leave at credit, an average salary of ₹1,00,000 a month, and receive ₹12 lakh. The leave counts in full because 350 days is less than 30 × 25 = 750. Its cash value is 350 × ₹1,00,000 ÷ 30 = ₹11,66,667. Ten months’ salary is ₹10 lakh, which is the smallest limit, so ₹10 lakh is exempt and ₹2 lakh is taxed.

Points to check

Salary here means basic pay plus dearness allowance that counts for retirement benefits, plus any commission fixed as a percentage of turnover. The page values a day’s salary as a thirtieth of a month’s. Your employer’s leave rules may count leave in a different way, so check the days on your final settlement.

With your numbers

  1. The exemption is the smallest of four amounts; leave counts at most 30 days a year of service
