How to use the Scientific Notation Calculator

  1. Enter a finite decimal number, including zero or a negative value.
  2. Read normalized scientific notation and the equivalent E notation.
  3. Use the coefficient and exponent rows to inspect the two parts separately.

A coefficient and a power of ten

Move the decimal until one non-zero digit remains before it. The number of places moved becomes the exponent:

value = coefficient × 10^exponent1 ≤ |coefficient| < 10 for non-zero values

Positive exponents describe values of magnitude ten or more; negative exponents describe values below one. E notation carries the same information without superscript formatting.

See OpenStax scientific notation.

With your numbers

  1. Move the decimal in 0.000456 until the coefficient has one non-zero digit before it.
  2. Coefficient = 4.56; exponent = -4.

Quick reference

Non-zero coefficients are normalized between 1 and 10 in magnitude.

Common questions about the Scientific Notation Calculator

What makes scientific notation normalized?
For a non-zero value, the coefficient has magnitude at least 1 and less than 10.
What does a negative exponent mean?
It moves the decimal point to the left and represents a number whose magnitude is below 1.
What is E notation?
It is a keyboard-friendly form. For example, 4.56e-4 means 4.56 multiplied by 10 to the power of minus 4.
How is zero represented?
This calculator displays zero as 0 times 10 to the power of 0. Zero is a special case because it has no unique order of magnitude.
