How to use the Average Calculator

  1. Enter one observation per row; labels are optional.
  2. Add or remove rows until the list matches the dataset.
  3. Compare mean, median, mode and range rather than assuming one average tells the whole story.

Several meanings of average

The arithmetic mean is only one measure of the center:

mean = sum of values ÷ countrange = maximum − minimum

The median comes from the sorted middle, and the mode comes from frequency. They can disagree without any of them being incorrect. A skewed dataset or an extreme outlier often makes the median more representative than the mean.

See OpenStax mean, median and mode.

With your numbers

  1. Mean = sum ÷ count = 25 ÷ 5 = 5.
  2. Median = 3; mode = 3; range = 8.

Quick reference

Mean, median and mode can describe the same list differently.

Common questions about the Average Calculator

What is the arithmetic mean?
It is the sum of all values divided by the number of values.
How is the median found?
Sort the values and take the middle one, or average the two middle values when the count is even.
Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. Every value tied for the highest frequency is reported. If every value occurs once, the calculator says No mode.
Which average should I use?
The mean reflects every value but is pulled by extremes. The median is more resistant to outliers, while the mode reports the most frequent value.
