Common questions about the Canada Sales Tax Calculator
- What is the sales tax in each province?
- HST of 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. GST of 5% plus provincial sales tax of 7% in British Columbia and Manitoba and 6% in Saskatchewan. GST plus 9.975% QST in Quebec. GST alone in Alberta and the territories.
- What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?
- GST is the 5% federal tax. HST combines GST and provincial tax into one rate in the provinces that have harmonized. PST is a separate provincial tax in provinces that haven't. Quebec's QST works like a PST.
- How do I take sales tax out of a total?
- Divide by one plus the combined rate. $113 including 13% HST is $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax.
- Does Nova Scotia still charge 15%?
- No. Nova Scotia's HST fell to 14% on 1 April 2025.
