How to use the Clothing Size Converter
- Measure yourself over light clothing, with the tape level and snug but not pulled tight.
- Choose the kind of garment, which decides the measurement that sets the size, and enter your measurements.
- Read the EN 13402 size for each measurement and the band it covers, then compare those centimetres with the brand's own size chart.
Clothing sizes are not standardised
A label such as 12, M or 40 is a brand’s own shorthand. The European standard EN 13402 exists because those labels do not mean the same thing between brands or countries: it names a garment by the body it is made to fit, in centimetres. This page gives you that designation from your measurements, not a guess at a US, UK or letter size.
EN 13402-2 picks the measurement that sets the size for each kind of garment:
| Garment | Sets the size | Also shown |
|---|---|---|
| Women’s tops, dresses, jackets | Bust | Waist, hip |
| Women’s skirts and trousers | Waist | Hip |
| Men’s jackets, knitwear and T-shirts | Chest |
EN 13402-3 then divides each measurement into sizes that are bands, not points. Up to the larger sizes they are 4 cm apart and each covers 2 cm either side, so a bust of 91 cm falls in size 92, which covers 90 up to 94 cm. Larger sizes step 6 cm for bust and waist and 5 cm for hip. A measurement exactly on the edge between two bands is given the larger.
How to measure yourself
This is what makes the result worth having. Wear light clothing or measure against the skin, stand relaxed, and keep the tape level and snug without pulling it in. Better still, have someone else hold the tape.
- Bust (women): around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms and across the shoulder blades, wearing the bra you will wear with the garment.
- Chest (men): around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, breathing normally.
- Waist: around the natural waist, the narrowest part of the torso, after a normal breath out.
- Hip: around the widest part of the seat, with your feet together.
Use the brand’s chart
When a brand publishes the measurements its sizes fit, that chart beats any conversion, this one included. Take your measurements in centimetres to it and pick the size whose range contains them, choosing by the measurement that matters most for the garment: bust or chest for a top, waist for trousers.
What this page leaves out
US and UK number sizes and XS to XXL letter sizes are not converted. None has a current standard whose measurements could be read: the US federal standard for women’s sizes was withdrawn in 1983, and the letter bands in EN 13402-3 are not publicly available. Men’s trousers and shirts are left out too: EN 13402 sizes them by waist with a table of alternatives and by neck girth, and neither table could be read. The women’s figures come from the 2004 edition of EN 13402-3 and the men’s chest from the 2013 edition; the current 2017 edition keeps such tables only as examples.

Common questions about the Clothing Size Converter
- What is my UK size in US sizes?
- There is no reliable answer, which is why this page does not give one. Neither the US nor the UK letter or number sizes have a current standard with published measurements, and brands set their own. A UK 12 from one shop and a US 8 from another can fit completely differently. Compare your measurements in centimetres with each brand's chart instead.
- Why do sizes vary between brands?
- A size label is a brand's decision about which bodies a garment should fit, based on its own customers and its own patterns. Nothing obliges two brands to agree, and the cut, the fabric and how much ease a design allows change the fit further. The body measurement is the only thing that stays the same from shop to shop.
- How do I measure my waist?
- Find your natural waist, the narrowest part of the torso, usually a little above the navel. Stand relaxed, breathe out normally and keep the tape level all the way round, snug against the skin or light clothing but not pressing in.
- What is vanity sizing?
- Labelling a garment with a smaller size than its measurements would once have carried, to flatter the buyer. Nothing now fixes what a size number means, so a brand is free to do it. The last US federal standard for women's sizes, PS 42-70, put a Misses 12 at a 35 inch bust measured over foundation garments; it was withdrawn in 1983, and a 12 today means whatever each brand's chart says. Your measurements are the only fixed point.
- What does an EN 13402 size look like on a label?
- A small pictogram of a body with the measurements it is made for, in centimetres, such as bust 92, waist 72 and hip 96. Each figure stands for a band: bust 92 covers 90 up to 94 cm.
