How to use it
- Measure the finished length of one straight gutter run.
- Enter how many separate runs have that same length.
- Enter the stock section length sold by your supplier.
- Enter the planned outlets per run and read the section and downspout counts.
How it is calculated
Each separate run is rounded to whole stock lengths before totals are combined:
Sections per run = ceil(run length ÷ stock section length)
Total sections = sections per run × number of runs
Downspouts = outlets per run × number of runs
This is more conservative than dividing the combined building length by stock length, which assumes every offcut transfers perfectly between runs.
Planning the system
This page counts straight stock only. It does not design drainage capacity or locate outlets. Roof area, local rainfall, gutter fall and the entire downstream route all affect a safe system.
Draw every run. Mark corners, stop ends, unions, outlets and changes in direction before ordering fittings.
Use one compatible system. Profiles and fittings that share a nominal size may not connect across manufacturers.
Plan safe access. Work at roof edges and on ladders carries fall risk. Use appropriate access equipment and competent installation practices.

- Why are sections rounded for each run separately?
- An offcut from one separate roof edge may not be long enough or suitable for another. Rounding each run avoids understating stock.
- Does this size the gutter or downspouts?
- No. Capacity depends on roof catchment, rainfall intensity, gutter profile, fall and outlet arrangement. Use a drainage design or local guidance.
- Are fittings included?
- No. Count corners, stop ends, unions, brackets, outlets and bends from the actual layout and the chosen manufacturer’s system.
