How to use it

How it is calculated
The measured lawn area is divided by the area of one supplier-sized roll:
Lawn area = length × width
Order area = lawn area × (1 + allowance)
Rolls = ceil(order area ÷ roll area)All dimensions are converted before multiplication, so feet, metres and the supplier’s roll format stay consistent.
Measuring a lawn
Split an irregular lawn into rectangles, calculate each area with the square footage calculator, and enter their total here. Do not include beds, paving or other areas that will not receive sod.
Measure the delivered product. Sod formats vary widely. The dimensions on the quote or product label are more reliable than a generic “standard roll.”
Prepare before delivery. Sod is perishable. Finish grading, soil work and irrigation checks before it arrives, and follow the grower’s handling guidance.
Round up to whole rolls. The final fraction cannot be purchased as part of a roll, which is why the headline result always rounds upward.

Common questions
- How many sod rolls cover 1,000 square feet?
- With 2 × 5 ft rolls, exactly 100 rolls cover 1,000 ft². A 5% cutting allowance makes the order 105 rolls.
- Are all sod rolls the same size?
- No. Standard rolls, slabs and big rolls vary by supplier and region. Enter the dimensions quoted for the product you will actually buy.
- How much extra sod should I order?
- Simple rectangles need little extra. Curves, narrow strips and obstacles create more unusable offcuts, so use Custom to apply the allowance appropriate to the layout.
- Does this calculate pallets?
- It calculates rolls. Divide the result by the supplier’s rolls-per-pallet figure and round up if you need a pallet count.
