How to use the Steps to Miles Calculator

  1. Measure your step length. Walk 20 ordinary steps along a tape or a known distance, measure from the first heel to the last, and divide by 20.
  2. Choose the direction and enter your steps, or the distance you plan to cover.
  3. Read the distance in miles or kilometres, or the number of steps that distance will take at that step length.

One multiplication

A step counter only counts. To turn the count into distance you need the length of one step, and the rest is multiplication:

distance = steps × step lengthsteps = distance ÷ step length

The page works in metres internally and converts at the end, so a step entered in inches and a distance wanted in kilometres mix without any rounding in between. The step count for a distance is kept exact and only rounded to a whole step for display.

Getting the step length right

Measure on flat ground at the pace you usually walk, and start walking a few steps before the first mark so every step you count is at full pace. Twenty steps averages out the small differences between one step and the next better than one or two. If you run as well as walk, measure both, since the two can differ, and use the one that matches the activity you are converting.

For pace, speed and finish times from the same distance, the running pace calculator takes it from here. The calories burned calculator turns an activity and its duration into energy.

With your numbers

  1. 10,000 steps × 30 in
  2. Distance = 4.73 mi

Quick reference

Real steps are not all the same length, so the result is an estimate built on the one step length you enter.

Common questions about the Steps to Miles Calculator

How many steps are in a mile?
It depends entirely on your step length. A mile is 63,360 inches, so at 30 inches a step it is 2,112 steps, and at 25 inches it is 2,534. Enter your own step length to get your own number.
How far is 10,000 steps?
Multiply by your step length. At 30 inches a step, 10,000 steps is 300,000 inches, just under 4.75 miles; at 76 centimetres it is 7.6 kilometres. Someone with a shorter step covers less ground in the same count.
Is step length the same as stride length?
Not always. A step is from one heel to the other heel; a stride is two steps, from one heel back to the same heel. The two words are not used consistently, so check which one your device or app means. This page wants one step, so if you measured a full stride, halve it.
Why does the page not estimate my step length from my height?
Because that would mean building in a rule of thumb or a table that fits an average person rather than you, and a measured step is easy to get. Twenty steps and a tape measure take about a minute.
