How to use the UK Student Loan Repayment Calculator 2026/27
- Enter your income for the year before tax.
- Pick your undergraduate plan, and say if you also have a postgraduate loan.
- Read what you repay in the year and what comes off each monthly payslip.
The calculation
Student loan repayments work like a tax on income above a threshold, collected through PAYE with income tax and National Insurance.
undergraduate = 9% × (income − plan threshold), not below zeropostgraduate = 6% × (income − £21,000), not below zeropayslip = each month's figure, rounded down to the pound
If you have more than one undergraduate plan, the 9% is charged once, above the lowest of your thresholds. The Student Loans Company then splits it between the plans.
With your numbers
- 9% of income above your plan’s threshold, plus 6% above £21,000 for a postgraduate loan
- Payroll rounds each month’s deduction down to the pound

Common questions about the UK Student Loan Repayment Calculator 2026/27
- How much do I repay on a student loan?
- 9% of income above your plan's threshold. For 2026/27 that is £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4 and £25,000 for Plan 5. A postgraduate loan is repaid at 6% of income above £21,000, on top of any undergraduate repayment.
- Which plan am I on?
- Plan 1 is for English and Welsh students who started before September 2012, and Northern Irish students. Plan 2 is for English and Welsh students who started from September 2012 to July 2023. Plan 4 is for Scottish students. Plan 5 is for English students who started in or after August 2023. Your plan is on your Student Loans Company account.
- Why is my payslip deduction different from 9% of my yearly income?
- Payroll works out each pay period on its own: the month's pay above a twelfth of the threshold, times 9%, rounded down to the pound. If your pay is steady, twelve monthly deductions come to a few pounds less than the yearly figure. If your pay varies, a high month can trigger a repayment even when the year's income is below the threshold, and you can claim a refund.
- When is the loan written off?
- Plan 1 25 years after you were first due to repay, Plan 2 and Plan 4 after 30 years, Plan 5 after 40 years, and postgraduate loans after 30 years. Earlier Plan 1 and Plan 4 loans can be written off at 65.
- Does the interest rate change what I repay each month?
- No. Monthly repayments depend only on income. Interest changes the balance, and so how long you keep repaying and whether the loan is written off before it is cleared.
