How to use the Net Worth Calculator
- List what you own, one row each, at what it would sell for today.
- List what you owe, one row each, at the balance still outstanding.
- Read your net worth, your totals and how large your debts are against your assets.
The formula
net worth = total assets − total liabilities
The share of assets owed is total liabilities divided by total assets. It shows how much of what you own is matched by debt; a share above 100% means debts exceed assets.
Getting the values right
Net worth is a snapshot on one day, and it is only as good as the values you type. Cash and account balances are exact. A home, a car or a collection is an estimate, because its value is whatever a buyer would pay. Retirement accounts can be listed at their balance, though taxes may be due when the money comes out.
What this page does not do
It does not compare your figure with anyone else’s or say what it should be at your age. Tracking your own figure once a quarter or once a year shows whether it is moving the way you want, which is more useful than any average. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
With your numbers
- Total assets = $443,000.00
- Total liabilities = $275,500.00
- Net worth = $443,000.00 − $275,500.00 = $167,500.00

Common questions about the Net Worth Calculator
- What counts as an asset?
- Anything you own that has a value you could turn into money: cash, savings and checking accounts, investments, retirement accounts, the value of your home, vehicles and other valuable property. Use what each would fetch today, not what you paid.
- What counts as a liability?
- Every debt you still owe: the mortgage balance, car loans, student loans, credit card balances and personal loans. Use the balance outstanding today, which is on your latest statement, not the amount you first borrowed.
- Can net worth be negative?
- Yes. If you owe more than you own, net worth is below zero. That is common early on, for example with student loans and few savings, and it says nothing about income. The page shows the figure as it is.
- Should I include my home?
- Include it if you want the full picture, with the mortgage listed under what you owe, so only your equity counts. Some people also work out a figure without the home, since it is hard to spend. Try both by removing the home and mortgage rows.
