How to use the Ratio Calculator

  1. Enter the two positive whole-number terms in their original order.
  2. Use the simplified ratio for part-to-part comparison.
  3. Use the percentage shares when the two terms make up one whole.

One relationship, several useful forms

A ratio compares quantities in order. Dividing both terms by their greatest common factor produces the smallest equivalent whole-number pair.

simplified terms = a ÷ gcd(a,b) : b ÷ gcd(a,b)first share = a ÷ (a + b)

Ratios may be part-to-part or part-to-whole; do not interpret the percentage shares as meaningful unless the entered terms together form the relevant whole.

See OpenStax ratios and proportions.

With your numbers

  1. Greatest common factor = 14.
  2. Simplified ratio = 3:4; first share = 42.8571%.

Common questions about the Ratio Calculator

How is a ratio simplified?
Both terms are divided by their greatest common factor.
Does order matter?
Yes. A ratio of 3:4 is not the same comparison as 4:3.
Why do the shares add to 100%?
Each term is divided by the sum of both terms, so together they represent the full two-part total.
What is the unit rate?
It divides the first term by the second and states how much first term corresponds to one second term.
