How to use the Generator Fuel Cost Calculator
- Find the manufacturer-stated fuel use per hour at the load you expect to operate, and select whether that figure is in US gallons or litres.
- Enter hours per run, the number of runs and a fuel price in the same volume unit as the burn rate.
- Review total operating time, fuel volume, total fuel cost and cost per operating hour.
Extend a stated burn rate over operating time
This calculator deliberately begins with the manufacturer’s fuel-consumption figure at the intended load. It does not guess fuel use from generator watts.
operating hours = hours per run × number of runstotal fuel = fuel per hour × operating hourstotal cost = total fuel × price per gallon or litre
The selected burn-rate unit and fuel-price unit must match. Results assume the hourly rate stays constant for every entered run.
Portable-generator safety
Fuel cost is not a safety or installation assessment. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that generator exhaust contains deadly carbon monoxide: never operate a portable generator indoors or in a garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or porch. Operate it outside at least 20 feet from the home with exhaust directed away, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and use working carbon-monoxide alarms.
Never connect a generator to household wiring by plugging it into a wall outlet. Generator selection, transfer equipment and wiring require the manufacturer’s instructions, local rules and qualified electrical guidance.
With your numbers
- Operating time = 10 hours × 1 runs = 10 hours
- Fuel = 0.75 gal/h × operating time = 7.5 gal
- Fuel cost = total fuel × $3.50 per gallon = $26.25

| Example | Estimated total fuel cost |
|---|---|
| 0.75 gal/h for 10 hours | $26.25 |
| 0.5 gal/h for three 8-hour runs | $48.00 |
| 1.2 gal/h for 24 hours | $93.60 |
| 2.8 L/h for 10 hours | €44.80 |
| 1.5 L/h for two 6-hour runs | €32.40 |
| 4 L/h for 20 hours | €112.00 |
Common questions about the Generator Fuel Cost Calculator
- Can I calculate fuel use from the generator watt rating?
- No. Fuel consumption varies by model, engine, fuel and load. Use a consumption table or figure from the manufacturer for the operating load you expect.
- Can I use this for gasoline, diesel or propane?
- Yes when the manufacturer gives a liquid-volume burn rate and your price uses the same gallon or litre basis. Do not mix mass, cubic-foot or other pricing units with this calculator.
- Why might actual fuel use differ?
- Load changes, idle periods, temperature, altitude, maintenance and fuel condition can all change consumption. The result holds the entered hourly rate constant.
- Does this calculator tell me how to install or connect a generator?
- No. It does not size equipment or assess placement, wiring, transfer equipment or ventilation. Follow the manufacturer, local requirements and qualified electrical guidance.
