How to use it

  1. Enter the joist run and deck width shown on the framing layout.
  2. Enter the specified centre-to-centre joist spacing.
  3. Select whether the starting edge is supported by a ledger or a freestanding beam line.
  4. Enter the beam-line spacing and beam ply count from the approved design.

How it is calculated

The calculation converts specified spacings into layout counts:

Joists = ceil(deck width ÷ joist spacing) + 1
Ledger beam lines = ceil(joist run ÷ beam-line spacing)
Freestanding beam lines = ceil(joist run ÷ beam-line spacing) + 1
Beam members = beam lines × plies per beam

The extra joist closes the far edge after the spaces have been counted.

Structural limits

This calculator does not design a deck. It never selects lumber species, member size, allowable span, cantilever, spacing, connection, post or footing. Enter only values taken from an approved project layout.

Check the support model. A ledger must be structurally suitable and correctly connected. Some buildings or jurisdictions require a freestanding deck regardless of the apparent attachment point.

Use centre-to-centre spacing. Clear gaps between joists are smaller than the framing spacing and will undercount material if entered here.

Create a cut list. Total linear length does not guarantee that available stock can make every unspliced member shown on the plan.

Common questions

How many joists for a 12 by 16 foot deck at 16 inch centres?
Across the 16 ft width there are 12 spaces at 16 in, so the layout needs 13 joists including both edge joists.
Does this calculator choose joist or beam size?
No. Member sizes, spans, spacing, connections and footings are structural choices that must come from an approved design and local requirements.
Why does a freestanding deck have one more beam line?
A ledger supports the starting edge. A freestanding layout needs a support line there as well as the lines counted along the joist run.
Does total length equal stock pieces?
No. Stock lengths, permitted splices and cut locations depend on the framing plan. The length totals are for material planning only.
