How to use the Oven Temperature Converter

  1. Choose whether you are converting a temperature or a gas mark.
  2. Enter it, in Fahrenheit, Celsius or kelvin, or as a gas mark from 1 to 9.
  3. Read the dial setting in both scales and as a gas mark, the exact conversions, and the usual setting for a fan oven.

The conversions

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9gas mark n = 250 °F + 25 °F × n, for marks 1 to 9

Celsius and Fahrenheit meet at −40, where both scales read the same. Water freezes at 0 °C, 32 °F, and boils at 100 °C, 212 °F at sea level.

Practical settings

An oven dial does not do 176.67 °C. The page rounds to the steps dials are marked in, the nearest 5 °C and the nearest 25 °F, and gives the nearest gas mark. The exact figures are there too, for a digital oven or a recipe that needs them.

With your numbers

  1. °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
  2. Gas mark n = 250 °F + 25 °F × n

Quick reference

The dial setting rounds to the nearest 5 °C or 25 °F; an oven thermometer tells you what the oven really does.

  1. No standard defines the gas mark scale. Manufacturer and consumer tables agree on 275 °F at mark 1 to 475 °F at mark 9: Indesit ID60C2 S cooker instructions (2012), p. 10, https://documents.manchester.ac.uk/display.aspx?DocID=58169; Which?, Oven temperature conversion table, https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/built-in-ovens/article/oven-temperature-conversion-table-aA5Ol9b157On

    Used for

    • The base of the gas mark scale: mark n is 250 °F plus 25 °F per mark, for marks 1 to 9.
  2. The same tables as oven.gasMarkBase: each mark from 1 to 9 is 25 °F above the last (Indesit ID60C2 S instructions p. 10; Which? oven temperature conversion table).

    Used for

    • The step between gas marks: 25 °F of difference.
  3. A convention, not a standard. Which?, Oven temperature conversion table, https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/built-in-ovens/article/oven-temperature-conversion-table-aA5Ol9b157On: fan temperatures are "typically around 20°C less"; Indesit ID60C2 S instructions (2012) p. 10: "up to 20°C"; Miele UK gives 10 to 20 °C, https://www.miele.co.uk/cs/kitchen/inspiration-advice/miele-oven-roast-bake-tips-5028

    Used for

    • How much lower a fan oven is usually set than a conventional one: 20 °C of difference. A convention, not a standard.

Common questions about the Oven Temperature Converter

What is 350 °F in Celsius?
176.67 °C, which is gas mark 4. No oven dial is marked in hundredths, so set 175 °C, or 180 °C if your oven runs cool. The difference is far smaller than the error of most oven thermostats.
What is gas mark 4 in Celsius?
Gas mark 4 is 350 °F, which is 176.67 °C, usually set as 175 or 180 °C. Each gas mark from 1 to 9 is 25 °F hotter than the one before, starting from 275 °F at mark 1, so gas mark n is 250 + 25n °F.
How much lower should I set a fan oven?
The usual convention is 20 °C lower than the conventional temperature a recipe gives, because the fan moves heat into the food faster. It is a convention, not a standard: many recipes now give the fan temperature themselves, so check which yours means.
Why does my oven run hot or cold?
Oven thermostats are often out by more than any of the adjustments on this page, and the temperature swings as the element cycles on and off. An inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle shelf tells you what your oven actually does, which is worth more than a precise conversion.
